In observance of Day of Valor today (April 9), Opposition Senator Leila M. de Lima has urged the Filipino public to draw strength and courage from war heroes and veterans to fight the oppression and flagrant abuses incessantly perpetrated by the Duterte administration.

De Lima, a social justice and human rights champion, said now is the perfect time to call out the excesses of the present administration to make Mr. Duterte and his allies realize that Filipinos are not afraid to defy the unjust policies of the government.

The Day of Valor or Araw ng Kagitingan, observed every April 9 of every year, commemorates the Fall of Bataan to Japanese imperial forces during World War II.

More than anything, De Lima said the occasion should give honor to the courageous soldiers and veterans who stepped up to inspire others to reclaim the country’s national dignity and stand up for the future of the Philippines.

“Freedom from colonial yoke was not achieved overnight. It became possible because there were Filipinos who had the courage and determination to fight for what is just and right,” she said.

Aside from remembering all men and women of valor in Philippine history, De Lima said the remarkable occasion should also highlight the efforts of every Filipino who continues to valiantly fight inequality and speak out against abuses in government to this day.

With the midterm elections just around the corner, De Lima said the Day of Valor should remind Filipinos to boldly choose worthy leaders who have enough strength and courage to defy Mr. Duterte and defend the people from abuses.
