After the SC justices voted unanimously to pass the ball to the lower courts in deciding on the plea for release of several political prisoners amid the pandemic, it should not stop us in pushing for measures to uphold the rights of our PDLs under humanitarian and compelling circumstances.

I urge the Supreme Court to heed Justice Marvic Leonen’s call to consider providing for a remedy, grounded on social justice, called the “Writ of Kalayaan,” to immediately address jail congestion and protect the rights of PDLs by treating them with humanity, especially during a public health emergency.
